5 Card Stud Rules

Five card Stud has been an earlier game of poker that has fallen out of favor with the majority of poker players playing these days (both at casinos and in online sites), Seven card Stud has taken its place in acceptance with a large number of poker players.

Five card Stud has been a fairly easy game, many of the opinion that it has been too easy to keep competitors interested for extended periods.  With only one down playing card there has been not much tension in determining what the rest of the participants have, bluffing is only able to go so far, and good hands are easily observed by other players for an easy lay down.

Even with these shortcomings the game is not without a few followers, thus it has been offered at a few web based sites.

To play a game of Five playing card Stud you carry out the following:

  • All those playing ante up before the cards are dealt (table limits control the size of the ante required).
  • The dealer gives each person two cards, one face down (the ‘hole’ playing card) and one playing card face up.
  • Beginning with the participant displaying the highest value card a round of betting occurs.
  • All participants are given one more card, face up.
  • There is the next round of wagering.
  • All players are given a further card, face up.
  • Another round of betting occurs, however in this round the minimum wager has been doubled.
  • The last card is given to every participant (face up).
  • A last round of wagering happens.

After the final wagering round the remaining competitors show their completed hand, with the most recent player to raise displaying their cards first.  The highest poker hand wins the poker game and claims the pot.

Five Card Stud is different from Texas Hold’em and Omaha Poker games in that the player holding the highest ranking face up hand wagers first for that round.  The betting then goes clockwise around the table, but the first bettor for each round might vary as the best hand showing moves around the table.
